FAMILY PLANNING
The Nurse Practitioners and Specialist Practitioner in Practice Nursing provide advice on all methods of contraception including pills, coils, caps and condoms.
The morning after pill must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, or a coil (IUCD) fitted within 5 days. Please make an appointment at the next available surgery. You will be fitted in as an emergency, if necessary.
MINOR SURGERY
Minor surgical procedures are carried out at the surgery. Please make an appointment to see the Doctor or Nurse Practitioner if you think you may need this service, which includes minor operations under a local anaesthetic, liquid nitrogen (freezing) treatment of warts, skin tags etc and joint and soft tissue (muscle and tendons) injections.
ANTENATAL CARE
When your pregnancy has been diagnosed you will be asked to make an appointment for the antenatal clinic. You will be seen by the attending midwife who will explain the arrangements for antenatal care within the Practice.
A Doctor is also present during the clinic times and you will be referred onto the Doctor by the midwife if necessary.
POST NATAL EXAMINATIONS
Are usually carried out 8 weeks after delivery.
BABY CLINICS & CHILD HEALTH SURVEILLANCE
The Practice is involved in routine health checks which are carried out with the Health Visitors on a Thursday afternoons at Moor Park Centre and Wednesday afternoons at Glenroyd Whitegate Drive. The Health Visiting team and the Doctor are involved in carrying out 8 week assessments, 7-9 month checks, 7-8 month hearing and vision checks, 18 month check. 3 year checks and childhood immunisation programme.
VACCINATIONS AND TRAVEL ADVICE
The Practice Nurses are available by appointment to give advice on routine immunisation and travel vaccinations. Most immunisations are available without prescription. Please allow at least 8 weeks before you are due to travel. The Practice is now a registered Yellow Fever Centre.
FLU VACCINATION AND PUNEUMOVAX
In accordance with Department Of Health Guideline we recommend an annual flu vaccination for patients aged 65 years and over and patients with chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes and residents of nursing and residential homes.
Annual vaccinations start early October. All patients who have chronic heart, lung, liver, renal (kidney) disease, on immune suppressing therapy (steroids and chemotherapy), diabetes, sickle cell disease sufferers, HIV positive patients, organ (inc bone marrow) transplant recipients and those have no spleen are recommended to receive vaccination to protect against infection with the “pneumococcus”, the commonest bacteria involved in pneumonia and other respiratory infections. All patients over 65 years of age are strongly advised to have pneumococcal vaccinations.
CERVICAL CANCER SMEAR TESTS
There is a “call and recall” system to remind you about “smear tests” which are carried out by appointment with the Practice Nurses. Women aged 25-49 years will be recalled every 3 years for routine tests, or as directed by the laboratory analysing the tests. Women aged between 50-64 years will be recalled every 5 years.
CHRONIC CONDITION MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS
These appointments are run by the Practice Nurse. They are for patients with ongoing complaints in which more complex management plans can reduce the risk of complications. For example asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke.
TEST RESULTS
The doctors review the results of all tests carried out by the practice. These results will be given out over the telephone by the reception staff, or an appointment made. For test results please contact the surgery after 1.30 pm-5.00pm.
